Xpdf is an open source PDF viewer that includes command-line information extractor and font analyzer utilities. The following utilities are particularly relevant to digital preservation:

* ''pdfinfo'': prints the contents of the ‘Info’ dictionary (plus some other useful information) from a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. In addition, the following information is printed:

tagged (yes/no)

form (AcroForm / XFA / none)

* ''pdffonts'': lists the fonts used in a Portable Document Format (PDF) file along with various information for each font

The following information is listed for each font:

name the font name, exactly as given in the PDF file (potentially

including a subset prefix)

type the font type

emb “yes” if the font is embedded in the PDF file

sub “yes” if the font is a subset

uni “yes” if there is an explicit “ToUnicode” map in the PDF file

= Description =
[http://xena.sourceforge.net Xena] is a digital preservation tool that first identifies a digital object’s file format, and for certain formats then converts the object into an open format. Xena also creates a base64-encoded version of the file (using only printable ASCII characters) with an XML metadata wrapper.
====Provider====
The National Archives of Australia
====Licensing and cost====
[http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html GNU General Public License version 3] - free.
====Development activity====
Xena version 6.0.1 was released on 14 June 2012.
Development is ongoing as part of the National Archives’ Digital Preservation Software Platform.
Xena includes an API for integration with other preservation tools.
====Platform and interoperability====
Xena is part of the National Archives’ Digital Preservation Platform, which also includes [http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/external/digital-preservation-recorder-dpr Digital Preservation Recorder (DPR)], Checksum Checker, and Manifest Maker. It is designed to fit into a workflow managed by the DPR.
Written for Java SE 6 (JRE 1.6), Xena is a cross-platform application which runs on Linux, Windows and Apple Mac OS X.
For Xena to work properly with all supported file formats, users must install six other applications: FLAC, Readpst, the ImageMagick Convert tool, the Tesseract OCR (optical character recognition) engine, LibreOffice, and Exiftool.
====Functional notes====
Xena supports conversion and normalisation of many file types, including archived/compressed files, audio, databases, documents, email, graphics, and page description files. The full listing of supported formats, as well as the open format that is used for normalisation, can be found [http://xena.sourceforge.net/help.php?page=normformats.html on the Xena site]. Note that Xena currently does not support any video file types. File formats that are not supported are simply normalised, by base64 encoding of the content and wrapping in XML metadata.
====Documentation and user support====
The Xena Sourceforge [http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/xena/index.php?title=Main_Page Wiki] provides a number of explanatory documents, a “Help” guide, and extensive installation instructions. The Sourceforge site also hosts a Bug Tracker and a Feature Request Tracker. Contact information is published for the Digital Preservation Team at the National Archives, but there are no specific help forums.
====Usability====
Xena includes both command line interface and a GUI. Windows users can also take advantage of an installation wizard.
====Expertise required====
Users benefit from knowledge of file format standards and metadata outputs. Installation and configuration for Xena itself does not require serious expertise; however, as part of a larger preservation workflow, it requires solid understanding of application design.
====Standards compliance====
Xena’s normalisation process converts files to open formats.
====Influence and take-up====
DPR is used by the National Archives of Australia. Sourceforge statistics show over 3000 downloads of version 6.0.1 as of July 2013.
Xena is also used within the [http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resource/external/planets-testbed Planets Testbed] workflows.
= Description =
The xcorrSound tool compares sound waves using cross correlation and finds the best overlap. The package contains several tools.

* overlap-analysis (earlier xcorrSound) is a tool to find the overlap between two audio files. It outputs best sample number and second and value of match.

* sound-match is a tool to find all occurrences of a shorter wav within a larger wav

* waveform-compare (earlier migration-qa) is a tool that splits two audio files into equal sized blocks (default 5 seconds) and outputs the correlation for each block (a_i,b_i), if a and b was the input

* sound_index is a tool to build an index in which sound-match can find all occurrences of a shorter wav (still in development phase)

The tools all make use of cross correlation, which can be computed through the Fourier transform.

= User Experiences =
This tool was developed and used at The Danish State and University Library in the following scenarios.

===Overlap Scenario===

The State and University Library in Denmark possesses a large amount of digital audio files which are radio broadcasts from DR (Danmarks (Danish) Radio). All radio broadcasts from DR in the period 1989 to 2005 have been digitised. The broadcasts were recorded on 2 hour tapes. In order not to loose any data, one tape was put in one recorder and a few minutes before it reached the end, another recorder was started with another tape. This yields two tapes with some overlap. All these tapes have now been digitized and the digitized dataset is 20Tbytes of audio files in 2 hour chunks with unknown overlaps; the library wishes to remove this overlap. The xcorrSound tool finds the overlap.

===Migration and QA Scenario===

The waveform-compare tool is used in SCAPE Solution [http://wiki.opf-labs.org/display/SP/SO4+Audio+mp3+to+wav+Migration+and+QA+Workflow SO4 Audio mp3 to wav Migration and QA Workflow].

===Sound Match and Sound Index Scenarios===

*TBD*

= Description =
The [http://webcurator.sourceforge.net/ Web Curator Tool] (WCT) is a workflow management application for selective web archiving. WCT allows users to target websites that they wish to include in their collection, create and manage schedules to automatically harvest those sites, and package the collected files to easily submit them to a digital archive.
====Provider====
Developed by the National Library of New Zealand and the British Library, initiated by the International Internet Preservation Consortium. Currently maintained by Oakleigh Consulting Ltd.
====Licensing and cost====
[http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html Apache Public License] – free.
====Development activity====
Version 1.6 is now available on Sourceforge and was released on 5th Dec 2012.
No information is available on the current funding status for development, although the sourceforge site’s bugtracker continues to list new entries and responses.
WCT encourages developer participation, publishing a Developers Guide with the latest release.
====Platform and interoperability====
WCT was written in Java and designed to run in Apache Tomcat. It has been tested on Red Hat Linux, Solaris, and (to a lesser extent) Microsoft Windows. Three relational databases are officially supported: Oracle, MySQL and PostgreSQL.
The software itself makes use of part or all of several other open-source components, including: Heritrix; Wayback; Acegi Security System; Apache Axis; Apache Commons Logging; Hibernate; Quartz; and Spring Application Framework.
====Functional notes====
An important functionality of the software is the ability to collect, store, and abide by harvest authorisations, i.e. permissions to download from the copyright holders. WCT also creates separate administrative levels, so that those who set up the harvests do not necessarily have the authority to have the system actively begin them.
All material is captured in ARC format; since WCT incorporates Wayback, access within the system is not a problem. However, those who collect material with the ultimate goal of archiving it in a separate system must take the format into account.
====Documentation and user support====
The project site includes a well written quick-start guide and [http://webcurator.sourceforge.net/docs/1.5.2/Web%20Curator%20Tool%20User%20Manual%20(WCT%201.5.2).pdf user manual], although the manual includes heading sections missing the corresponding text. The site also includes a developer guide, published with release version 1.5.2. Links to the advertised wiki and FAQ sections are currently broken, forwarding to the sourceforge developer page instead. More information about the project can be found in an informative [http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue50/beresford/ article] published in Ariadne Issue 50.
The primary forum for technical support appears to be an active “webcurator-users” mailing list. While bugs continue to be posted on the sourceforge bug/ feature request tracker, the last addressed item was in February 2011.
====Usability====
WCT is specifically designed to be operated by non-technical users such as librarians, with a simple and relatively intuitive GUI. Installation, however, is difficult and most likely requires tech support.
====Expertise required====
Setup, especially if it includes links to an archival repository, requires system administration knowledge. Users must have a comprehensive understanding of their institution’s collections policies when designing harvests.
====Standards compliance====
WCT allows users to add basic Dublin Core metadata to the material.
====Influence and take-up====
WCT is used by the National Library of New Zealand, the National Library of Norway, and the British Library. The sourceforge site lists nearly 8,300 downloads as of December 2011.
There is a free trial available but I bought it for my project at a reasonable price. I have been using it for four years and find it very helpful for managing my digital space, files and for making lists of files.
ssdeep is a program for computing context triggered piecewise hashes (CTPH). Also called fuzzy hashes, CTPH can match inputs that have homologies. Such inputs have sequences of identical bytes in the same order, although bytes in between these sequences may be different in both content and length. ssdeep uses a rolling hash algorithm, hence changes to the file will result in only localized changes in the CTPH signature.
